Choosing a Pet
Deciding to bring a pet home is a very serious decision and should not be made without careful thought and consideration. Think a year ahead. Then think further ahead. Pets require time, energy and money. Get the family together and ask questions of yourselves. These questions might include the following:
  • Do we have room for the pet?
  • Between work, school and other activities, do we have time enough to give to the animal?
  • How big will this puppy be a year from now?
  • Will our children lose interest after the adorable puppy or kitten becomes an adult dog or cat? And when that happens, will we, the adults, be ready to give our pet the attention and love it needs?
  • Will our landlord, if this applies, allow pets?
  • Do we travel a lot? If so, who will care for our pet when we’re gone?
  • How much will it cost to care for the animal properly? Don’t forget proper veterinary care, including illnesses or injuries that could come up.
Approach pet adoption thoughtfully, as you would any long-term committment. Do not adopt on a spur-of-the-moment whim.
